There are a number of agencies in Birmingham. Why do you work at The Modern Brand?

I’ve worked for global corporations where it often felt like your ideas and intentions got diluted along the way. That doesn’t happen here. We’re all intimately involved in the creative process and it makes for truly genuine, impactful work. So, I guess you could say it’s a conscientious thing because I respect the way we operate and the organizations we serve, and that we retain more creative integrity. I also appreciate how supported we are in our efforts to learn new skills—it’s good for both vertical and horizontal professional growth.

What is your spirit animal?

The Humuhumunukunukuāpua’a (a.k.a. Picasso triggerfish)! They sleep on their sides, like me. They’re good at hiding, like me. And I definitely belong in a tropical climate in or near the water. Plus, I love color theory and Humuhumus have this stunning, painted appearance and use metachrosis to adapt to their surroundings, which is fascinating.

What is your favorite beverage and why?

Bubble tea. It’s an exotic juxtaposition of textures and flavors and it’s literally full of surprises—you never know when you’re going to inhale a big, chewy tapioca ball. Bubble tea also has nostalgic connotations for me. It takes me back to college: glory days on the sand volleyball courts and hazy nights spent critiquing K-pop music videos…

What is your favorite part about working at The Modern Brand?

The relationships. Getting to know my talented coworkers, and by extension, their dogs. Oh, and access to art supplies! And proximity to The Pizitz!

What has been your favorite project here and why?

Create Birmingham’s film office website, Film Birmingham, has been fun. As a recent transplant, research for the site helped me learn a lot about my new city and all the things it has to offer. I’m impressed by the number of economic and artistic development initiatives gaining momentum here.
