Why did you create The Modern Brand?

I started Modern Brand because there was an obvious need in Birmingham for a smaller, faster, and more affordable branding agency. Start-ups and non-profits simply could not afford the costs related to a bigger agency and were therefore missing out on the power of branding. My goal has always been to work with clients who are passionate about their business and to show them how branding can increase their impact. I work at Modern Brand because we get to work with clients who would otherwise never have the chance to work with an agency.

What’s your spirit animal?

This one was easy for me. My spirit animal is a hummingbird. Like the hummingbird, I can never be still. I am always looking for the next task or thing to move on to. And I love sugar.

What is your favorite beverage? Why?

My go-to drink at the bar is an old fashioned. I love bourbon and something about the old fashioned is so perfect. It’s the bitters with the orange that make it feel so balanced. But if you really want to know my favorite beverage, it has to be Milo’s Sweet Tea. Kind of goes with my Hummingbird Spirit Animal.

What’s your favorite part about working at Modern Brand?

I have two (of course I do). My first favorite part is creating brand strategies for really complex clients. I love the challenge of taking a really complicated subject like liquid DNA sequencing or specialized law practice and then turning that into a brand strategy that will appeal to the target audience. I like knowing that if I get it just right, a well crafted brand strategy that sets the tone for an organization is something that can live for decades. My second favorite part is presenting creative work. There’s something about the thrill of a pitch meeting where you have weeks and weeks of work in your hand and you have no idea how the client is going to react. It still makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

What’s been your favorite project? Why?

I love all of our clients for one reason or another, so it is really hard for me to pin down one project from the last 8 years. But some of the projects that come to mind are the paddle signs we created for Blue Canoe Properties because they trusted us and took a big gamble on an innovative idea, the Scrum Process Diagram we created for Braintrust because it was the first time the pigs and chickens came to life for their brand and now I can look back and see how it set the tone for an entire company, and the rebrand of the Cultural Alliance to Create Birmingham because it was such an important project and huge step forward for our creative community in Birmingham.
